Buy or rent a scissor lift in Los Angeles?
Renting makes sense for a one-off job. Once a lift is on your site most weeks, the monthly invoices quietly pass what the machine is worth. Here is the honest way to run the numbers before you sign another rental contract.
The simple break-even test
- Add up your last 12 months of lift rental invoices — including delivery, pickup, damage waiver and fuel/environmental fees. Those add-ons are usually 20–30% on top of the rate.
- Divide the purchase price of a comparable used 19 ft electric lift by that yearly rental total.
- If the answer is under about 1.5, owning pays for itself inside 18 months — and you still own a machine with resale value at the end.

- • You want the machine on your truck at 6 a.m. without a reservation.
- • You want the asset on your books and the resale value at the end.
What ownership actually costs
- • Annual inspection. Required under ANSI A92.20 — we do these in LA and Orange County.
- • Batteries. A well-charged pack lasts years; keeping it watered and charged is the single biggest factor in lift ownership cost.
- • Preventive maintenance. Hydraulics, chains, wear pads and brakes checked on a schedule.
- • Storage and charging. A 30 in wide electric lift fits in a standard shop bay and charges on 110 V.
- • Financing. Most buyers finance so the monthly payment sits close to a rental payment — except at the end you own it.
